ASL Donations

On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, we were shocked and amazed (and extremely delighted) to see Ike and Alan Barinholtz win the One Million Dollar Prize on the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire game show! The team played specifically to help Los Encinos School incorporate an American Sign Language (ASL) Program that can serve as a model for schools nationwide.

For more information, please see the press releases.

Although Los Encinos School doesn’t have any Deaf students, the benefits of learning a second language (and a non-verbal one, in particular) are well known for cognitive development and connecting with others. See the winning moment below, as well as an interview backstage where Ike explains his motivation. A million thanks to everyone involved!

Los Encinos School is thrilled to announce the launch of an innovative American Sign Language (ASL) curriculum, making it one of the first K-6 schools in the region without a Deaf student population to integrate ASL education into its academic program. This groundbreaking initiative reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment and equipping our students with universal communication skills that will be integrated throughout the disciplines.

Los Encinos School is partnering with The ASL Shop to bring the rich language and culture of the Deaf community to LES. The multifaceted approach will include staff training, student classes, tutoring, and field trips to introduce the language – as well as the rich culture – of the Deaf community to all.
