In early January, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 virus a global health emergency, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health started to focus most of its resources on this emerging catastrophe.

Throughout February, the news kept getting more and more grim. Cases began appearing in the U.S. in patients with no travel history. The signs were pointing to a crisis, and we followed the news very closely. We were privy to weekly calls with LA County Public Health and started to plan for the unimaginable.

In those early days, we anticipated a remote learning scenario and began researching various online teaching tools or communication apps that would allow us to continue teaching even if we were forced to shut down the campus. Our IT provider, SimplicIT, as well as our friends at Planet Bravo each gave us good advice.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=”769,773,981,772,771,770,768,767,766,982″ fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”17px”]

We selected SeeSaw for the lower grades (K-3) and Google Classroom for grades 4-6. We purchased new devices and held material day pick-ups to ensure all students had the necessary supplies for At-Home Learning.

As time went on, we had two main goals: Keep the learning on the same level and at the same pace that we’d expect in a normal year, and maintain the same culture and community feel that we’re used to. (Or at least try to get as close as we can on both counts.)

So to say the pandemic took us by surprise is not completely accurate. We saw warning signs and we got prepared. Our success hinged on community support and flexibility. Looking back, Ilene and I are grateful to the teachers for pulling it off and the parents and students for their patience and wherewithal while making so many accommodations. We know it wasn’t easy for anyone.

I hope we don’t have to face more tests like this as a community, but I’m confident that, if we do, the theme “Stronger Together” will pull us through.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=”https://vimeo.com/419129537″ disabled_on=”off|off|off” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ width=”100%” custom_margin=”||||false|false” locked=”off”][/et_pb_video][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=”860,789,790,791,792,793,794″ fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_gallery][et_pb_button button_url=”https://losencinosschool.org/annual-report-1920/40-more-memories” button_text=”LAST PAGE: 40 More Memories…” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”14px” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color=”#7dad40″ button_border_width=”0px” button_border_radius=”0px” button_letter_spacing=”2px” button_font=”Montserrat|700||on|||||” button_icon=”%%3%%” button_on_hover=”off” custom_padding=”24px|30px|24px|30px|true|true” locked=”off” button_bg_color__hover_enabled=”on|hover” button_bg_color__hover=”#202470″ button_bg_enable_color__hover=”on”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Mission” _builder_version=”3.22″ locked=”off”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_5,3_5″ _builder_version=”4.8.1″ custom_padding=”||0px|||”][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_video src=”https://vimeo.com/399320747″ _builder_version=”4.8.1″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_video][et_pb_accordion open_toggle_text_color=”#e66229″ open_toggle_background_color=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” closed_toggle_text_color=”#ffaa00″ closed_toggle_background_color=”rgba(0,0,98,0.03)” icon_color=”#ffaa00″ admin_label=”Accordion” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ toggle_font=”Montserrat|700|||||||” toggle_font_size=”16px” toggle_line_height=”1.5em” custom_margin=”-22px|-20px||-20px|false|true” border_width_all=”0px” locked=”off”][et_pb_accordion_item title=”At-Home Learning” open=”on” _builder_version=”4.8.1″ body_font_size=”17px” custom_margin=”10px||10px||true|false” toggle_text_color=”#000000″ toggle_level=”h2″ toggle_font=”Arbutus Slab||||||||” toggle_font_size=”50px” toggle_line_height=”1.2em”] by, Jonathan Beckmann Asst.
