{"id":1641,"date":"2021-07-20T17:14:53","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T00:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losencinosschool.org\/alumni-page\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2021-07-29T13:52:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T20:52:19","slug":"zion-takes-home-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losencinosschool.org\/alumni-page\/2021\/07\/20\/zion-takes-home-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Zion Takes Home Gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22&#8243;][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_4,1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.7&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.7&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span class='et-dropcap'>Z<\/span>ion Ota\u00f1o (&#8217;18) was recently honored by ACT-SO (the Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics) for his art piece entitled <em>Ashay<\/em>, which Zion says is a West African, Yoruba word meaning, &#8216;to be with us.'&#8221;\u00a0 Zion further explains that the piece is a handmade coffin filled with 241 individual clay faces that correspond to the 241 African-Americans shot and killed by police in America in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>The detail and thoughtfulness of the piece belie Zion&#8217;s 15 years of age by winning both the Regional <em>and<\/em> the National Gold medals.\u00a0 Due to Covid, the national convention required everyone to present their pieces online (see the video below of Zion&#8217;s presentation at the national convention where he explains the work in detail).\u00a0 <span>His prizes include a $2,000 scholarship, an IPAD Pro, and an <\/span><span>Apple<\/span><span> w<\/span><span>atch<\/span><span>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zion aspires to be a lawyer and is about to begin his sophomore year at Harvard-Westlake.
